Disability Information

The University of Nottingham is committed to promoting access for students and staff who have a disability, dyslexia and/or a long-term medical condition. We aim to enable students to fulfil the requirements of their courses as independently as possible, and provide a range of services accordingly.

Disabled Staff

Disabled staff should seek advice from their line manager in the first instance, and from Human Resources.

Disabled Students

What we need you to do

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the University is aware of his/her individual requirements. Disabled students and students with a specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) or long-term medical condition are urged to inform their tutors and the School’s Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) – see below. Letting us know what you might need at an early stage will help us to help you. You should also read through our Disability Disclosure and Confidentiality Policy, and make sure that you provide us with a signed copy of the associated consent form in order for us to communicate your needs to others where appropriate.

What we can offer you

We can offer a range of academic and practical support for all students. Academic Support is responsible for making recommendations for alternative arrangements such as those required in examinations, assessments and for timetabling. Academic Support also incorporates a recognised ACCESS Centre for those who wish to apply for Disabled Students' Allowances, carrying out the assessments required by your LEA or funding body. Assistance can also be given with regard to queries about adapted accommodation and University provision of accessible transport.

The School’s procedure for disabled applicants follows the University policy. You can be referred to Academic Support, either at the application stage, or once you are a registered student or both. Academic Support will work with the School of Geography to ensure that you receive the support you require. You can also refer yourself to Academic Support at any stage. The referral form can be downloaded from http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~lgzwww/teaching-learning/current/extcirc/Referral-to-Academic-Support.pdf

If you have a disability and intend to come on one of our open days, please contact the School Office in the first instance (Andrea Payne, 0115 9515428, andrea.payne@nottingham.ac.uk) to discuss any particular support you may need for your visit.

School Disability Liaison Officer (DLO)

The School’s Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) is Dr Alexander Vasudevan (alexander.vasudevan@nottingham.ac.uk, 0115 9515455). Within the School of Geography, he will usually be your first point of contact if you have a disability-related issue which you wish to discuss. Your personal tutor can also be approached in the first instance, and is likely to refer you on to the DLO. The role of the DLO is to provide a point of reference, advice and guidance for students in the School about disability issues and support, and to ensure that the School’s Disability Action Plan is implemented.
