I worked in several parts of the NHS, and then went to the University of Glasgow to do an M.Sc. in Health Informatics. After that, I worked at Anglia Ruskin University, where I did my PhD. I moved to the University of Nottingham where I was in the School of Health Sciences until September 2014.

Research

Current Research Projects

Dr Paraskevas Vezyridis and I have been awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship by the European Union for a study of big data in health care.

With Rosely Moralez de Figueiredo of the Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos (Brazil) I've been funded by FAPESP to study educational interventions in healthcare associated infections

With Julie McGarry and colleagues from the NUH ED, we're evaluating services for survivors of domestic violence.

With colleagues from Napier University (Iain Atherton & Richard Kyle), King's College London (Glen Robert and Sara Donetto), and the University of Warwick (Kate Seers), I've been funded by the ESRC to put on a seminar series entitled "Nurse Education and The Social Sciences".

I've been funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme to do a study of the Nottingham Health Sciences Biobank

With Dr. Sree Nair of the Centre for Women's Development Studies and Dr. Catrin Evans I'm studying the development of nursing as a profession in Kerala, in a globalised context.

Completed Research Projects (Nottingham)

With Maria Clara Padoveze (University of Sao Paulo),Rosely Moralez de Figueiredo (Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos), and Prof. Judith Tanner, I was funded by the British Council & FAPESP to run a workshop in Sao Paulo on qualitative research in infection control.

With Heather Wharrad and Fiona Bath-Hextall (University of Nottingham) and Cassia Soares (University of Sao Paulo) I was funded by the British Council and FAPESP to run a workshop series in Brazil entitled "Evidence-based practice in a global context".

With Dr Keiko Tsuchiya of Yokohama City University, Prof. Svenja Adolphs of the School of English, Prof. Bryn Baxendale and Prof. Frank Coffey, I looked at communication in simulation of resuscitation in the ED, supported by a grant from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.

I did some evaluation work on initiatives in Emergency Medicine training for the East Midland LETB.

With Bryn Baxendale, Frank Coffey and Justin Waring I looked at the implementation of clinician-led human factors training in operating theatres and the ED.

Funded by the Resuscitation Council of the UK I investigated why organisations purchase AEDs.

With Catherine Vass and Mark Avis, I was involved in the qualitative part of a larger study of the use of bed sensors in hospital (The REFINE trial)

With Frank Coffey, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, NUH Trust, I studied the implementation of 'lean' methods, derived from manufacturing, in the Emergency Department. With Paul Martin from Sociology, I was awarded a grant from the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness to extend this work.

With Aru Narayanasamy, Alison Edgley and Andy Meal, I looked at whether nursing can be characterised as a transdisciplinary discipline. With Linda East, I did an evaluation of the new staff uniforms at the QMC

With Russell Harrison-Paul, I examined the implementation of Automatic External Defibrillation in a variety of organisations. This project was funded by the Resuscitation Council of the UK.We extended this work to interview people who have bought an AED to have at home (also funded by the Resuscitation Council of the UK).

With Alastair Morgan and Alison Edgley, I developed and evaluated a reader and podcasts to support the post-graduate Philosophy of Social Science module. This was funded by the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies.

With Heather Wharrad and colleagues from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, and Castle College, we looked at the use of RLOs across the HE, FE and NHS sectors. (Grant from the Eduserv Foundation.) The project website is here

With Aru Narayanasamy, I studied how the religious beliefs of students influence their construction of a professional identity.

With Alastair Morgan and Alison Edgley, I did a project funded by the University of Nottingham's Learning and Teaching Development Fund on what impact the post-graduate Philosophy of Social Science module had on post-graduate students' learning.

I developed and evaluated an e-learning resource to support the post-graduate Philosophy of Social Science module.

With Alison Edgley, I studied student nurses' perceptions of the relevance of sociology.

I was awarded a grant by the University of Nottingham's Learning and Teaching Development Fund for a project on developing student dissertations into publications and programmes of research. The findings are now being implemented on the MNursSci and LBR BSc programmes

With Jacqueline Randle from the School of Nursing I did an evaluation of Clinical Placement Development Facilitators, on behalf of the Trent Workforce Development Confederation.

With Professor Nicky James, I evaluated the nurse transcribing project for Rushcliffe PCT

I studied for my Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Andrew Webster of the Science and Technology Studies Unit in the University of York, and Professor Ray Jack, the Open Learning Foundation Professor of Social Work at Anglia Ruskin University. Resistance to the Implementation of Information Systems by NHS Staff was a sociological study examining how and why computerised care planning systems are resisted by qualified nursing staff. This was a qualitative study, using in-depth interviews.

With David Justham from the School of Nursing, I researched the acceptablity and usefulness of an online statistics module and assessment using WebCT (Grant from the University of Nottingham), and this project has been developed further with funding from the School of Nursing
