Paratrechina jaegerskioeldi (Mayr)

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Egypt (Prenolepis jaegerskioeldi nov. spec., Mayr, 1904b: 8, worker; Emery, 1910a: 130, queen & male) Cairo. At present (May 2015) the Mayr type is not available on Antweb.
junior synonyms
borcardi (Prenolepis (Nylanderia) Jaegerskioeldi Mayr var. Borcardi, nov., Santschi, 1908: 533, illustrated male genitalia; all forms; synonymy Santschi, 1938a: 43) - Bolton has type location as "North Africa" but M Borcard collected ants in Cairo, Egypt - see below.
traegaordhi (Prenolepis traegaordhi n. sp. Forel, 1904h: 14, worker & male) South Sudan, Ghrab el Aish, north of Fashoda, White Nile - see below.

{short description of image}Mayr's (1904b) description is at {original description} and {original description}. Forel's (1904h) description of traegaordhi is at {original description}. Santschi's (1908) description of borcardi is at {original description}. Emery (1910a: 130) gave an illustrated description, this is at {original description}.

Note LaPolla, Hawkes & Fisher (2011: 12) state they have synonymized P. traegaordhi, Paratrechina weissi, Paratrechina nimba and Paratrechina zelotypa under jaegerskioeldi.
This I (BT) believe to be wrong other than for the first.
They did not examine the types from Egypt but claim "this is a broadly defined species with a range of color, size and setation observed".
For illustration they chose CASENT0179587 from Kenya, which I regard as zelotypa. They list specimens from the Central African Republic as the only other modern African specimens they sighted.

Comparing the type images and the modern specimens from Egypt and Sudan (see below) I agree that P. traegaordhi and P. borcardi appear to be true junior synonyms of jaegerskioeldi. Paratrechina zelotypa, as shown on my page for that species, is both smaller and has a different alitrunk profile. See the links on the Ants of Africa version of this page.

Paratrechina jaegerskioeldiThe photomontage of the borcardi type is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0910993.

This, like the traegaordhi type shown below, is matched by the modern specimens from Egypt and Sudan, although (assuming the Antweb scale is accurate) it is slightly smaller.
