The Second Year

Sections

F32CO5 - Wave Phenomena

Convenor: Prof. Anne Green, anne.green@nottingham.ac.uk, Room CAPT B107

The module is lectured by Prof. Anne Green and Dr. Lucia Hackermuller (room C122)

It is a 20 credit year-long module for all second year students taking a degree involving Physics.

Many physical systems support the propagation of waves, from the familiar waves on the surface of water to the electromagnetic waves that we perceive as light. After an introduction to wave equations, the first half of this module will focus on optics: the study of light. Topics to be covered will include: geometrical optics; the wave description of light; interference and diffraction. The second half of the module will introduce more general methods for the discussion of wave propagation, specifically methods for the solution of partial differential equations and Fourier methods. These will be illustrated with examples from optics and other types of wave phenomena.

Lecture notes, problem sheets, model answers etc. will all be placed on Moodle.
