The School is delighted to spotlight six postgraduate students from overseas who have been awarded a PhD very recently. These students come from India, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq, Thailand and China respectively, and their research covers the current hot topics in biomedical science. Together, they have put together a body of work which will contribute to advancing scientific knowledge and understanding in their field of research, world-wide. They are:
Bhavish Ahir, supervised by Dr Margaret Pratten and Bhavesh’s thesis is entitled “A study of developmental toxicity using chick heart micromass and D3 mouse embryonic stem cells – a possible role for connexins”
Ahmed Hamed , supervised by Dr Jeff Fry, and Ahmed’s thesis is entitled “Investigation of multiple cytoprotective actions of some individual phytochemicals and plant extracts”
Muhammad Qasim Memon , supervised by Professor Ian Macdonald, and Qasim’s thesis is entitled “Cardiovascular effects of physiological and dietary interventions in healthy males”
Dereen Najat , supervised by Dr Robert Layfield, and Dereen’s thesis is entitled “SQSTM1 mutations and Paget’s disease of bone”
Jariya Umka, supervised by Dr Peter Wigmore and Jariya’s thesis is entitled “The control of adult neural stem cell proliferation and cognition by valproic acid”
Yining Zhang (Pierre), supervised by Dr Tyson Sharp, and Pierre’s thesis is entitled “Characterization of the role of tumour suppressor protein LIMD1 in P-body formation and miRNA-mediated gene silencing”
And not forgetting our home-grown talent – David Carrier, Annie Patel, Leonie Norris, Sam Shelton, Anisha Mehra, Lisa Jolly and Ivan Rattray were also awarded their doctorates recently.
