Research Summary

Current research concentrates of the use of post-genomic technologies to monitor gene expression profiles/patterns and gene regulatory networks in the following related areas:

1. Development of commercial genetic markers in rice for enhanced nitrogen-use efficiency (ICUK, Joined with Prof. Ping Wu, at Zhejiang University). An integrative systems approach is used on rice varieties to map the genes, understand their effect on nitrogen metabolism and develop genetic markers to facilitate selection of N-efficient lines.

2. Gene regulatory network to investigate vernalization in wheat (BBSRC). We use microarray data to identify target genes which are associated with vernalisation/cold response and functional interactions between genes by systematic functional analysis. The inferred wheat networks (ANNs) showed several highly connected genes which are thought to integrate extracellular signals are regulate growth. These include SPK1, a GTP binding protein and CDF2 transcription factor.

3. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis. Developing new technologies and methods for analysing transcriptomic profiling at the single-cell level (cell sorting and microcapillary) to improve our understanding of the molecular and cellular basis in plant and medical science (e.g. metastasis of cancer and cancer stem cell).

2007-2011, UoN studentships: The characterisation of novel abscission-related genes in Arabidopsis thaliana (Yang Liu, jointly with Professor Jerry Roberts).

2008-2012, BBSRC CASE studentships and CCFRA Studentships: Manipulating Rab GTPase activity in wheat to affect gluten quality (Adam Tyler, jointly with Dr Grantley Lycett).

2010-2014, IDTC Integrative Biology: Modelling the development of root hairs in rice (Dongbin Liu, jointly with Prof Ping Wu and Dr. Nick Monk).

In collaboration with University of Nottingham, Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB, http://www.cpib.info/): Transcriptomic profiling at the single-cell level (cell sorting and microcapillary) in Arabidopsis.
