Biography

  • In 2004 I was appointed to an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project at The University of Nottingham to explore the role of science and language in the UK foot and mouth disease outbreak of 2001. This was followed by two further ESRC grants which I held with colleagues at Nottingham on 'cleanliness' in the poultry industry and health claims of `probiotic' dairy products. Across the course of this work I became interested in ideas about the control and prevention of disease in animal populations.
  • I held a one year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at The W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics at The University of British Columbia (2005-06) and I first joined the Centre for Applied Bioethics (CAB) in 2008.
  • I was appointed as a Research Fellow in Animals, Society and Ethics in 2009.

Current Research

Early on in my career I became interested in how scientists and the public develop positions and then relate to each other (a subject sometimes known as the 'public understanding of science'). There are two strands to my current work:

  1. With Dr Millar (Director of the Centre for Applied Bioethics), I am exploring the ethics and the development of transgenic animals. The project is called PEGASUS and is funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme. We are partnered by twelve institutions including Wageningen University in the Netherlands, the Agri Biotech Foundation in India and the Institute of Food Research in the UK.
  2. With Dr Hobson-West (Lecturer in Welfare, Ethics and Society), I am preparing two scoping reports on the sociology of the veterinary profession and social research methods in veterinary science. I was awarded a prize in November 2010 by the School of Biosciences for a poster which described "My Research and Its Impact". More details can be found here.

My research commitments are combined with managing research related activites. This includes overseeing a new system of organising publications in our research team and the design of new website.
