Current Research

Work on Septoria tritici on wheat has recently examined the shift in sensitivity to a range of triazoles in isolates collected from diverse locations in the UK. We are establishing whether any of the published CYP51 polymorphisms are associated with changes in sensitivity and whether there is any benefit from using prochloraz as a component of fungicide treatments to control of this disease. In parallel, we are also working on strobilurin resistance in Pyrenophora teres on barley and seeking alternative options for crop protection,

A CASE studentship with Micap plc is exploring the potential of micro-encapsulation of triazole fungicides, by examining the relationship between release properties of active ingredients from differing micro-capsules in relation to fungicide efficacy in controlling plant diseases.

A long-standing interest in Botrytis cinerea continues with a research programme on integrated control of botrytis disease of lettuce, utilising a combination of biocontrol with antagonistic bacteria, and the incorporation of antifungal constructs, such chitinase transgenes.

Work on the microflora of leaves in conjunction with biological control of foliar pathogens is funded by Branston Potatoes. This is in conjunction with Matt Dickinson and Rupert Fray.

Future Research

I am initiating a research programme on evaluation of nano-particles preparations of pesticides, to enhance activity with reduced inputs.
