My research interest is predominantly in the field of nutritional support and oncology. My doctoral studies involved the development and validation testing of a cancer appetite and symptom questionnaire to predict weight loss in people with lung and upper GI cancer. In addition to using quantitative methods, the research project also included a qualitative study. Using the principles of grounded theory the aim was to explore the experiences of people with lung or gastrointestinal cancer and their carers regarding the initial signs of weight loss.
I am currently working alongside the Nottingham Palliative Care Research Team on a study investigating the use of neuromuscular stimulation (NMES) in people with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatment. My participation in the study includes firstly the analysis of food intake data. Secondly, I am responsible for a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. The aim of this is to explore patients' experiences of using NMES. Analysis using interpretative phenomenological analysis is underway.
In collaboration with the research team at University Hospitals Leicester data collection, for a study investigating the effect of post-operative home jejunostomy feeding on quality of life and nutritional parameters in patients with oesophago-gastric cancer, will start in the coming months.
