Short Courses
THE SCHOOL OF BIOSCIENCES IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST TEACHING AND RESEARCH CENTRES FOR FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED BIOLOGICAL AND FOOD SCIENCE IN THE UK.
Courses at the School of Biosciences are taught by leading specialists and focus on a diverse range of environmental issues, plant and animal growth and reproduction, agricultural production, food quality and preservation, health and nutrition. A constant focus on modern developments, processes and techniques ensures that students are placed ahead of their field and leave with the best possible start to their careers.
The School's reputation as a centre of pioneering excellence is endorsed by the grades it has been awarded for both teaching and research:-
-
23 out of 24 across all Bioscience degree courses in the most recent UK Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA).
-
The joint submission (School of Biosciences, School of Veterinary Medicine and Science) to 'Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Science' came TOP in the UK Research Assessment Exercise, December 2008, when assessed in terms of Research Power.
Location and Facilities
Courses are based at the Sutton Bonington Campus, with the exception of Environmental Science, which is based at University Park.
The School benefits from state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities dedicated to the study of biosciences, including purpose-built plant and food science buildings, many specialised laboratories, a 24-hour learning resource centre, university farm and brand new dairy centre. The facilities have been further enhanced by the establishment of a new School of Veterinary Medicine and Science in September 2006.
Teaching and Student Support
All students have a personal tutor, who is a member of the teaching staff and will be able to give advice and support on academic and individual matters. With a student/staff ratio of 11:1 the School of Biosciences at Sutton Bonington is well known for its supportive and friendly community environment; the quality of the learning experience results in around 75% of graduates being awarded a first or 2.1 degree.
