Current Research

Dr Szatkowski's research interests lie in two broad areas - tobacco control and the use of large databases of routinely-collected medical data. Work to date has focused on the use of primary care medical records to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policy interventions on patients' smoking status, GPs' delivery of cessation advice, referral of smokers to stop-smoking services, and prescribing of nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline and bupropion. Other projects include:

  • the use of national survey and primary care data to understand trends in smoking behaviour in patients with mental health disorders and the delivery of smoking cessation support to these groups.
  • understanding the effectiveness of mass media campaigns in reducing smoking, second-hand smoke exposure and smoking-related disease in England & Wales.
  • collaboration with colleagues at the University of Birmingham to use primary care data to investigate the association between smoking cessation and control of diabetes mellitus.
  • developing the use of econometric time series analysis methods in public health.
