Ahmed Hashim completed his undergraduate medical degree at Baghdad University/ College of Medicine, after which he worked as a junior resident physician in Iraq. He was awarded the degree of Master's in Public Health from the University of Nottingham in 2008. He was then appointed as an Epidemiologist/Biostatistician for a year before beginning his PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health, also at the University of Nottingham.

Ahmed Hashim's main area of research interest is pandemic influenza. He is currently working in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Europe, and worked in Copenhagen during 2009/2010, assessing how countries reacted to the pandemic of that year.

During the influenza pandemic of 2009, he was also involved in working with the Flu Clinical Information Network (FLU-CIN), funded by Department of Health. This work involved clinical and epidemiological data collection of patients with confirmed H1N1 influenza infection admitted to hospitals in the UK.
