Biography

Ann McNeill has worked in the tobacco control field for over 25 years. She is currently Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, www.ukctcs.org. Prof. McNeill has published widely on tobacco control research and policy, previously chaired WHO scientific committees and was the recipient of a WHO Europe tobacco control medal in 1998.

Prof. McNeill convenes a Health Promotion Master's module and co-convenes two Tobacco Control Master's modules on the MPH course. She is also supervising a number of ongoing PhD, Masters and B.Med.Sci projects students at the University of Nottingham and in other universities within the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies. She co-convenes the division's tobacco research group.

Current Research

Prof. McNeill's main area of interest is tobacco control research and her research ranges across prevention, cessation, harm reduction and policy. She is currently managing a portfolio of applied research projects, including the development and evaluation of interventions to increase support for disadvantaged and hard to reach tobacco users (such as smokers with mental health problems and chewing tobacco users) and UK and international tobacco control policies.

Other current projects include:

  • Managing a project evaluating the North of England Partnership to reduce illicit tobacco use.
  • Action research in a disadvantaged area where prevalence of smoking is twice the national average with the aim of disrupting pro-smoking social norms.
  • Evaluating the impact of point of sale displays of cigarettes, assessing the effect of their removal in Ireland and looking how to develop this strategy.
  • Assessing the impact of a range of other tobacco control policies and interventions in the UK and other countries using the International Tobacco Control Project Evaluation Study and other databases.
  • Assessing the role of other tobacco and nicotine products in tobacco harm reduction
