Current Research

Dr Edmans is involved with the acute medical unit section of the NIHR Medical Crises in Older People Programme (MCOP), conducting research projects with older people discharged from acute medical units in Nottingham and Leicester.

The first part of the programme was a cohort study to establish the validity of the Identification of Seniors At Risk tool and to describe the health problems of older people who attend and are discharged from an acute medical unit and their outcomes.

The second part of the programme is a randomised controlled trial comparing usual care with usual care plus the addition of an interface geriatrician intervention, for older people being discharged from an acute medical unit who have been identified as being at high risk of readmission, functional decline or death. This study bridges between the hospital and community. Both studies are based both at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and Leicester Royal Infirmary, and Dr Edmans co-ordinates the study between the two sites.
