Biography

Dr Laura Jones graduated with a first class honours degree in Human Biology from Loughborough University, staying on to successfully gain her PhD in 2008 and become a Research Associate. In 2009, she began her work at the University of Nottingham as a Research Fellow. Her Fellowship was initially funded by the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies and is now funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

Dr Jones gives occasional lectures in EPH and teaches on the continued professional development for health care professionals working in tobacco. These are run by UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies. She also lectures on the Human Biology BSc degree course at Loughborough University.

Current Research

Dr Jones' main areas of research interest include reducing infant and childhood exposure to second hand tobacco smoke, maternal smoking behaviours, influence of smoking-related inequalities in health, strategies for harm reduction and sustainable tobacco substitutes.

Main research project: Smoke-free Homes Trial.

  • This is a mixed method research project with four main phases: two qualitative, a feasibility stage and then an exploratory randomised controlled trial.
  • The trial exists to try and develop an intervention to help families to stop smoking in the home, in order to protect children from second hand smoke exposure.
