Biography

Prof. Nadina Lincoln undertook her first degree in Psychology at the University of Wales, Cardiff, before going on to complete her Master's in Clinical Psychology at the University of Leeds. She worked for the NHS during which time she also studied for her PhD part-time at the University of London, and then worked in NHS as clinical psychologist until she joined the University of Nottingham in 1994.

Current Research

Currently Prof. Lincoln's main research projects in stroke rehabilitation are a trial of behavioural treatment for people with low mood and aphasia (CALM) and evaluating screening measures for cognitive impairment after stroke.

Her recent research has involved studies on the assessment of fitness to drive in people with head injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and dementia. She has recently been involved with validating a battery of cognitive tests to identify people with dementia who are safe to drive.

Studies on people with multiple sclerosis include evaluation of memory rehabilitation and an evaluation of adjustment groups.

She is also a member of the Arthritis Research Campaign Pain Centre and studies are planned on psychological factors related to pain in people with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Past Research

Her research has mainly been in the field of stroke rehabilitation. Early studies in this field were directed at developing outcome measures with sufficient reliability and validity to enable them to be used in the evaluation of different clinical interventions. Some of these measures (such as the Rivermead Motor Assessment, Rivermead Perceptual Assessment Battery and Extended Activities of Daily Scale) have become widely used both nationally and internationally. She has also been responsible for developing assessments for specific unique purposes. These included the Stroke Drivers Screening Assessment and the Stroke Aphasic Depression Questionnaire. The measures developed have been used to evaluate a number of clinical interventions, including speech therapy for aphasic patients, domiciliary rehabilitation, a specialist Stroke Unit, physiotherapy for arm function and occupational therapy for patients discharged from hospital. She has also carried out some evaluations in psychological aspects of rehabilitation, such as the treatment of cognitive deficits and depression.
