Individual guidance

Adviser and student talking

The careers adviser for research staff is Clare Jones. You can book a confidential careers guidance discussion with her by contacting the Careers and Employability Service reception on extension 13680.

Appointment times vary each week and if you find that the available days or times are not convenient due to your work or other commitments please discuss this with the reception staff as it may be possible to make alternative arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

How long do the appointments last?
Usually 45 minutes but there is no limit on the number of appointments you can have. Dependent on your situation you may have a series of appointments whilst, for example, considering a career move. The first appointment may involve a general discussion with subsequent appointments being used for specific work on a job application and interview preparation.

Where are the appointments held?
They usually take place in Clare’s office to ensure confidentiality. If this is not convenient a meeting can be held at your place of work but you would need to organise a suitable room. It may not be possible to guarantee confidentiality in this situation.

What topics can be covered?
Careers interviews cover a wide range of topics including general discussions about your career, exploring options in and out of academia, and career changes. They can also be used for CV and application feedback and preparing for interviews.

Do I need to bring my CV with me to a general guidance discussion?
It is not always necessary to bring your CV to this type of appointment.

My contract of employment finishes soon, can I still use the Centre?
Yes, even if your contract is ending in a few days or weeks. Research staff can continue to use our services for six months after the end of their employment. If you are a Nottingham alumnus there is no time limit on access to our services and support.

Do you offer email advice and guidance?

Research staff can access email advice and guidance although it is recommended that they have had a guidance interview prior to using this service.
