Biography

Steve Liddle was born in Sunderland in the North East of England. He obtained his BSc (Hons) in 1997 and PhD (Prof. W. Clegg) in 2000 from Newcastle University. After postdoctoral fellowships at Edinburgh University (Dr P. Bailey), Newcastle University (Dr K. Izod) as the Wilfred Hall Research Fellow, and the University of Nottingham (Prof. P. Arnold) he was appointed to a fixed-term Lectureship at Nottingham in 2007. He subsequently took up a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and Lectureship in 2007 and he was promoted to Associate Professor and Reader in 2010. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2011 and as Vice President to the Executive Committee of the European Rare Earth and Actinide Society (2012-2015). He was awarded the RSC Sir Edward Frankland Fellowship Award in 2011 and also the RSC Radiochemistry Group 2011 Bill Newton Award. He was a recipient of a European Research Council Starting Independent Researchers Grant in 2009. He is a board member of Philosophical Transactions A of the Royal Society and has published over 100 papers to date.

Current Research

I am interested in developing the chemistry of main group and lanthanide and actinide complexes which challenge preconceived ideas about structure, bonding, and reactivity. This involves the design of ligands to support complexes with unusual structural types or formal oxidation states, and the synthesis of new compounds, that have the potential to engage in bonding or redox chemistry, which would not be possible in more traditional systems. My research programmes use Schlenk-line and Glove-Box techniques and we use a wide variety of structural, spectroscopic, magnetic, and computational methods to characterise the structure, bonding and reactivity of our compounds. My research addresses exciting contemporary challenges in three main research themes: (i) the chemistry of metal-metal bonded f-element complexes using non-conventional ligand sets; (ii) multiple bonding of f-elements to main group centres; (iii) atropisomeric, non-racemic chiral-at-metal catalysts for enantio-/stereo-selective organic transformations and polymerisations. These projects blend fundamental lines of enquiry with more applied aspects and we collaborate with chemists' and chemical engineers widely.
