Current Research
My research looks at intertextuality and allusion between the Thebaid and Achilleid, and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. To understand how Homer works in Statius, I must also consider Vergil's Aeneid, to see how Statius might use Homer to undermine Vergil, or how much he takes from Homer through Vergil's work.
Extensive work has been done on the interplay between the works of Statius and Vergil, but much less considers how Statius uses Homer. Statius, although gaining more popularity now, has been considerably less popular in comparison to Vergil in the past. However, due to the intricacy and depth of composition, both the Thebaid and Achilleid are particularly rich in literary allusion.
The Thebaid is an epic comprising twelve books which deal with the events running up to the Theban war, the war itself, and its immediate aftermath. The Achilleid was probably meant to be of similar length, but the poet died before completion so we have only book 1, and a bit of book 2. The Achilleid therefore covers the early life of the young Achilles, disguised as a girl on Scyros.
I intend to go through these works thematically, studying them in terms of both language and content.
