Current Research

My thesis examines the formulation of foreign policy in Athens and how it was implemented to various regions of Greece. Orators and generals played a significant role in the shaping of foreign policy in Athens but, as there was no solid administration, policies tended to shift from time to time. Thus a thorough investigation is needed to understand the reasons why certain foreign policies took place and what underlying interests were behind it. Some support the assumption that foreign policy was made by individuals, others, see the demos as the decision maker. If we are able to understand what was going on in the Athenian mind when thinking of foreign policy, it will help to our understanding of the fourth century military politics and the importance some factors and events had.
