Current Research

My doctoral research is on the subject of status attainment and social mobility in classical Spartan society. The purpose of my research is to consider the avenues and opportunities which existed within Spartan society, particularly among the Spartiates, for the gain (and loss) of status, and so social position. My research considers particular aspects of Spartan society, such as political office and military command, and the avenues for social mobility which existed within these institutions. I also consider the question of precisely what the nature and significance of social differentiation was, within a group such as the Spartan homoioi, with their seemingly high level of social homogeneity. My research embraces evidence from various sources, including sociological theory, archaeology and epigraphy, but primarily literary evidence.
