Jubilee Campus

Jubilee

Jubilee Campus was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1999 and its state-of-the-art facilities house the School of Computer Science, the School of Education and the Nottingham University Business School. The site is also the home of The National College for School Leadership. Additional investment of £9.2 million in the Jubilee Campus was completed in 2004 with a second building for Nottingham University Business School opened by Lord Sainsbury.

Built on a site that previously had industrial use, its green credentials are impeccable.

An important feature of the campus is the series of lakes which, as well as being home to a variety of wildlife, provide cooling for the buildings in the summer and receive all surface water.

Less visible but equally important to the sustainable campus are the roofs which are, quite literally, green. A carpet of low-growing alpine plants helps maintain steady temperatures within the buildings throughout the year and is more effective than traditional insulation. Buildings also feature a super-efficient mechanical ventilation system, lighting sensors to reduce energy consumption, and photovoltaic cells integrated into the atrium roofs.

The environmentally-friendly nature of the campus and it's buildings have been a big factor in the awards that it has received, including the Millennium Marque Award for Environmental Excellence, the British Construction Industry Building Project of the Year, the RIBA Journal Sustainability Award and the Civic Trust Award for Sustainability. The Jubilee Campus also won the praise of the Energy Globe Award judges in 2005.

Significant further development of the Jubilee Campus is planned over the next ten years, following the acquisition by the University of the adjacent 18-acre former Raleigh site. The University will invest £200 million in a new scheme designed by Ken Shuttleworth, designer of the iconic and award-winning London 'gherkin'. At the heart of the new scheme will be the Nottingham 'volcano'. The first phase of the new Jubilee Campus development was a Research & Innovation Park completed in 2007–8.
