The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) welcomed its first students in September 2000. This development is a fundamental part of Nottingham's vision to become a truly global university for the 21st century and beyond. It is the first ever branch campus of a UK University abroad, earning the University the distinction of the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the field of international achievement, the first award of its kind to an academic institution.
The Malaysia Campus is a full and integral part of The University of Nottingham, UK and offers students the Nottingham experience in an Asian setting. It is a global institution serving an international community of students and yet is firmly rooted in all that is distinctive about UK education - innovative teaching and assessment methods, which encourage independent, creative thinking. Quality standards are also among the best in the world.
At the Malaysia Campus, foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have been successfully implemented since its inception in 2000, and continue to be developed to reflect the research and scholarship of The University of Nottingham. Currently, the Malaysia Campus offers programmes in Applied Psychology, Biotechnology, Business and Management, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Law and Pharmacy.
Computer Science at the Malaysia Campus is a fully integrated part of the School in Nottingham and all programmes offered at the Malaysia Campus are identical to those at Nottingham. As part of its mission to respond to the needs of students, employees and employers, the School of Computer Science at the Malaysia Campus is offering a variety of degree programmes directly relevant to the emerging knowledge economy. While this initiative is helping to produce a new generation of knowledge and IT professionals, we are also keen to assist in updating the skills of experienced employees, enabling them to participate fully in the rapidly changing workplace.
Locally international companies such as Agilent, Shell and Siemens have recruited UNMC graduates. We are also involved in developing research with international companies such as BT, INTEL and Ti as well as large local IT companies such as MIMOS. This means the students have an exposure to industrially relevant projects in their final year in particular, which makes them attractive to employers as they leave. We also offer placements with smaller, high-tech companies, such as Infovalley, to cultivate the spirit of entrepreneurship in our graduates in the environment of leading-edge technological developments.
