Genovefa Kefalidou

Biography

Dr. Genovefa Kefalidou is a member of the Human Factors Research Group, Faculty of Engineering, the Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute and the Computer Science Department. She has been awarded a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in Distributed Systems Engineering, an MRes in HCI and a PhD in Psychology from Lancaster University.

Expertise Summary

Her PhD thesis was an investigation of human performance when solving Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problems (CVRPs), a type of optimisation and transportation problems. As part of her PhD she identified human heuristics and observed human performance when solving CVRPs on paper-based problems and on a designed and implemented interactive tool. She has experience in designing, implementing and evaluating interactive systems. She is particularly interested in cognitive, social and ergonomic aspects of humans' interaction with innovative highly interactive interfaces and how this knowledge can be translated into practical and creative applications. She is also interested in Transportation Science and how transportation can be improved through peoples' everyday activities and behaviour. She has been awarded in the past funding from EPSRC and ESRC for studying and for conducting research and she has recently been awarded funding under the "Bridging the Gaps: Next Generation Feasibility Awards 2012" scheme, Roberts' Money, to conduct research in a multidisciplinary setting. She is currently working on SerenA project identifying user requirements for the design of the system and will be responsible for the evaluation stage (http://www.serena.ac.uk/). She is also working on the Creativity Greenhouse project (http://www.horizon.ac.uk/Current-Projects/Creativity-Greenhouse), which is about adapting and evaluating a Virtual Reality environment for research sandpits. She is going to be working also on a project with the Archaeology department and the Geospatial Sciences Institute in identifying individuals' experiences while following ancient paths.
