The School of Computer Science offers a supportive environment for study. On arrival you will be assigned a personal tutor who is responsible for your academic welfare throughout your time at Nottingham. In your first year you will have regular meetings with this tutor and will continue to see him/her several times a year throughout your degree.

You will also have ample opportunity to make new friends while working together with other students in a variety of small group exercises and group projects.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 100% of the School’s research was deemed to be of international standard and the School ranked 8th in the UK for research quality. Its research structure centres around four research groups:

  • Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning
  • Image Processing and Interpretation
  • Interactive Media
  • Foundations of Programming.

The School is home to the Learning Sciences Research Institute, a collaboration with the Schools of Education and Psychology.

This world-class research isn't just to boost our own international reputation—it feeds directly in to undergraduate teaching via an exciting range of option modules, and research-related project work.

Our single honours Computer Science degree is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). This is not only an external recognition of the excellence of our teaching but also a recognition that the skills you learn while studying the degree are of relevance to industry.

Graduates from our accredited degree qualify for exemption from the BCS Professional Examination. The degree also counts as partial fulfillment of the requirements for Chartered Engineer status. Undergraduates are entitled to join the BCS as student members and can attain Professional Membership after a shortened period of relevant experience and training.

The School of Computer Science also offers an exciting portfolio of one-year taught MSc courses (some of which are offered jointly with other schools) to provide appropriate courses for students with a wide range of backgrounds and career aspirations.
