Government deficits, reduced public spending, interest rates, unemployment, IMF predictions – economics and finance continue to dominate the news agenda. Small wonder, then, that the Globalisation and Economic Policy Centre's annual Sixth-Form Conference at the Nottingham School of Economics is yet again set to attract record numbers of would-be economists.

'Globalisation' is still an emotive word, but the truth is that the phenomenon has been going on for centuries. What have the Romans ever done for us? Well, they played their part according to Professor David Greenaway, Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP) and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham.

New research has claimed bonuses don't actually make us work any harder. According to a study by economists, fines are more effective than payouts when it comes to getting the most out of employees. The finding emerged amid the continuing furore over the huge bonuses being paid to bankers in spite of global financial meltdown.
