Melissa Yoong obtained her bachelor's degree in Information Technology from the University of Malaya in 2000, and joined Accenture as an IT consultant, working for retail clients in London, Manchester and Hong Kong. She left the firm after six years to pursue an MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, UK, which subsequently sparked her interest in sociolinguistics, particularly gender, discourse and power. Upon obtaining her MA in 2008, she joined the university's Malaysia campus. She teaches EAP, Applied IT, Research Skills and Interview Skills modules at the Centre for English Language Education. She is also the convenor for the centre's online learning modules.
