Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL)

school-based, part-time

VIsion for a world class teaching profession

Vision for a world class teaching profession

The Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is a national qualification designed to extend the teaching skills and abilities of teachers.

Key features of the programme

The Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is

  • Based on the idea of researching and critically reflecting upon one’s practice as a teacher and leader of learning, with the aim of improving such practice.
  • Personalised in order to meet the particular professional development needs of individual participants.
  • Designed to include study of the following content areas:
  1. Teaching and learning, personalisation and assessment for learning;
  2. Subject knowledge and curriculum; and curriculum development;
  3. Child development and inclusion;
  4. Leadership and management; working with others.

MTL funding changes

The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, has stated that he has decided to stop the central funding for new participants on the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) programme with immediate effect. Only those teachers who are already studying for the MTL will be funded to complete the programme. In his letter of December 6 to the TDA the Secretary of State explains his decision:

“The quality of teaching and teachers’ professional development are of utmost importance, and I am committed to developing a strong culture of professional development where more teachers acquire postgraduate qualifications like Masters and Doctorates and where teachers are supported to progress further academically and deepen their subject knowledge.

However, I also believe that teachers should decide for themselves which Masters level course is the right one for them and that a single Masters degree prescribed by Whitehall is not the right approach.”

Funding change implications

If you have already commenced your MTL study with the East Midlands Consortium, your TDA funding will remain in place until completion (up to the maximum permitted registered period).

If you are looking to commence an MTL programme in the future you will need to make your own arrangements for funding.  Further information on funding opportunities at the University of Nottingham can be found on the Postgraduate Funding database
