BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art

About the course

The part-time BA (Hons) Fine Art combines studio-based art practice and theory. The course concentrates on student development through a contemporary response to fine art media, including:

Contextual, theoretical and professional studies support studio based learning. Typically a student completes the BA through attendance 1 and a half days a week for 4 years. This is supported by students’ independent study from their studio base or home.

Who is it aimed at?

The course is aimed at students with previous fine art experience, for example Foundation Studies, A’ Level Art, or a large portfolio of self-directed art work.

Students range in ages and share a progressive and experimental approach to the study of Fine Art. 

 

How does it work?

The programme combines studio-based art practice and theory. The general aims of the degree are to:

  • concentrate on student development through a contemporary response to traditional Fine Art media
  • progress through the programme from tutor-led modules, to student directed learning/research
  • develop critical and contextual underpinning to practical work through the study of art theory and professional practice
  • foster a common approach of critical enquiry, dialogue and reflection

Learning is supported by regular one-to-one tutorials and a cross-level seminar programme.

 

What progression/career options are available? 

The BA (Hons) Fine Art will enable you to consider and prepare for the variety of options both during the course and after graduating, equipping you with the skills needed for your continuing independent art practice. These options include:

  • Studio practice
  • Postgraduate level study
  • Education and teaching
  • Professional practice in galleries and museums, public arts, the media, and the wider creative environment
