He is a Chartered Scientist (CSci), a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a Member of the Institute of Physics (MInstP), and a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (MIMMM), who in 2007 awarded him the prestigious Silver Medal in recognition of "...outstanding contributions and promotion of the field of materials science, engineering and technology at an international level". His research activities focus on porous solids. He has expertise in micro/ macro-structural characterization techniques including SEM/ TEM, EDS, XRD, XRCT, physisorption and diffusion, porosimetry, thermal conductivity, and DSC. His interests are in transport phenomena including heat & moisture transport, hygrothermal behavior, capillarity, permeability, evaporative drying, ion diffusion, and carbonation. He works mainly on materials for civil engineering or building physics applications including cement and concrete, soils and aggregates, stone, clays, ash & by-products, and more recently desiccants and phase change materials.
