Dr John Robinson's research interests encompass novel processing techniques using microwave technologies. Interests range from the fundamental science and engineering principles, electromagnetic simulations, scale-up and the development of continuous microwave treatment systems for a range of industrial applications. Processes have been developed for the decontamination of hydrocarbon-laden soils, pyrolysis of biomass and the treatment of contaminated drilling wastes, however this represents just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the number of potential applications. Microwave heating offers the opportunity to create unique thermal gradients within process materials due to the selective and volumetric nature of the heating processes. These in turn allow for significantly enhanced heat and mass transfer characteristics, which lead to industrial microwave processes that are more energy-efficient, flexible, have a higher turn-down capacity and can be carried out within a much smaller footprint than conventional methods. Microwave heating technology can subsequently provide a step-change for sustainable processing across industries from oil & gas to food and pharmaceutical.
