Teaching
The Department provides high quality professionally accredited or approved BEng (hons), MEng (hons) and MSc programmes.
We use a range of teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, field courses and various types of project work. All students have a personal tutor who offers general guidance and support, and are also linked with practising civil engineers (or similar professional persons). Teaching focuses on the application of the subject, for example, with regard to economy, safety, quality and the environment. Analytical engineering techniques are applied in a range of subjects including structural engineering, environmental fluid mechanics, engineering surveying, geotechnical engineering and transportation engineering. The BEng and MEng programmes include a survey field course, a group design project and at least one individual investigative project. The MSc programmes provide for a general qualification in Civil Engineering or one of a number of specialist topics.

Graduates who satisfy certain course requirements are also exempted from the Final Examination of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Geomatics Division) and the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.
All MSc courses are approved as Further Learning that can lead to professional qualifications by the approving bodies.

Selection
Applicants generally receive offers directly but all have the opportunity to attend a Visit Day when various activities are arranged. This is really an opportunity for applicants to get answers to their questions. We hold about 15 Visit Days between November and March in addition to the published University Open Days.
