Biography

Dr. Derek Gray graduated from University of Manitoba in 2001, having studied novel ehf-band quasi-planar array antennas for terrestrial point-to-point wireless "cable" service. While at Toyota Chuo Kenkyu-jo, he was a junior member of the DTV Team preparing and installing antennas on passenger vehicles, and conducting road trials and demonstrations. Additionally, he worked on prototype injection moulded ceramic antennas for SDARS, VICS, DSRC and ETC. In 2005, he moved to Jouhou Tsuushin Kenkyu Kikou where he initially worked on a fault finding exercise for the DTV broadcast trial from a UAV airship and the integration of a DOA into a solar powered stratospheric aircraft wing. The latter culminated in a trial using the Global Observer Prototype, the world's first hydrogen powered aircraft, in 2007. Since then, Dr. Gray has on equivalent systems onboard a manned airship for post-disaster recovery, an in-cabin WPAN propagation study for the MRJ, developed ehf-band lenses for airliner-to-ground high speed communications, and performed an initial engineering study for a half-metre diameter, 40dBic-class lens for land-mobile/aero-mobile with the WINDS-Kizune satellite.
