Biography

Selvan has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering since February 2005. He teaches and researches in the area of applied electromagnetics.

Prior to joining Nottingham, from January 1988 to February 2005, Selvan was with the Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering and Research, Centre for Electromagnetics, India. Here he was essentially involved in antenna analysis, design, and testing. During 1994-1997, he was the Principal Investigator of a collaborative research programme that SAMEER had with NIST, USA. Later he was the Project Manager/Leader of some successfully completed antenna development projects. In early 1994, he held a two-month UNDP Fellowship at the RFI Industries, Australia. He was the Secretary of Organising Committee of the International Conference on Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility 2003, held in cooperation with the IEEE EMC Society.

Selvan's original contributions have been chiefly in the areas of rectangular waveguide antennas, antenna metrology and engineering education. In these areas he has published a number of research papers in refereed journals. Selvan has been a reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation and the Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications. He is an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering and an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation.

At Nottingham, Selvan also considers and tries a teaching-in-context approach that he believes has the potential to trigger innovative thinking in students. Selvan&r

Future Research

A proposal on antenna performance improvement by the use of metamaterials is proposed to be submitted for MOSTI funding during summer. Besides, discussions are on with SAMEER, Government of India, for possible collaborative work on microwave processing for industrial applications. My essential overall agenda is to continue to try to strengthen the research capability of staff and students involved with the Applied EM Research Group and to try to strengthen the links with international institutions, including GGIEMR, Nottingham, so that the group emerges as a high-quality one with increasing international visibility.
