Biography

I joined the University of Nottingham and the Precision Manufacturing Centre in January 2010 after completing both my PhD and post doctoral research the University of Liverpool.

My research focuses on the use of non-traditional manufacturing methods to arrive at net shape while inducing novel or favorable material properties. I am engaged in active collaborations with researchers in Europe the USA and Japan where I have spent time as a research fellow at the University of Tokyo.

Expertise Summary

  • Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) - Material effects and condition monitoring.
  • Electron Beam Melting (EBM) - Processing of aerospace, tool and biomedical materials. Process modeling and understanding resulting material properties.
  • Laser Processing of Materials
  • Plasmatron Brazing
  • Additive Manufacturing Techniques - Laser, powder, wire and polymer based techniques.
  • Design

Teaching Summary

I currently teach on several courses both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level;

  • Near Net Shape Manufacture (NNSM) - Module Convenor - A second year module in which a range of routes to arriving at near net shape are explored.
  • Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) - A third/fourth year optional module which examines the more advanced modeling and simulation capabilities of solid modeling packages (currently ProE).
  • Third Year Group Design Project Reviewer (GDM) - As part of the design process project student must pass through gated reviews which are chaired by two academics.
  • Design for Manufacture (DFM) - A first year module dealing with the fundamentals of manufacturing techniques given to all first year engineers.
