Current Research

Advanced applications of numerical techniques in the finite element method for the simulation of the thermo-mechanical and metallurgical behaviour of power plant components, within regimes of integrity assessment and service life expectancy. The research is supported by in-depth analytical work and purpose-designed experimental procedures for determining material property data.

Past Research

The finite element simulation of the fusion welding of steel pipes in power generation plants, including stresses and strains induced by the welding thermal cycles. The simulation encorporated the effects of solid-state phase transformations on the mechanical behaviour and microstructural evolution. It allowed for tharmal procedures such as post-weld heat treatment. The research was supported by an experimental programme to determine relevant material property data.

Exploring the potential weaknesses in industrial welded joints of high pressure and temperature steel pipes in power plants, using finite element numerical analyses.

State of the art review of weld simulation using finite element methods.

A review of the fracture modelling of graphite for the integrity of graphite blocks in nuclear reactors.

The analysis of creep behaviour of power generation plant components by commercial and non-commercial computational methods. An extensive finite element study led to the development of a computer program, which predicts the creep behaviour and life expectancy of a comprehensive range of pipe bend geometries, having different material creep properties and experiencing a variety of pressure and temperature conditions.

The photoelastic and finite element analysis of sections of typical glass/polyester and wood/epoxy wind turbine blades, forming part of the overall methodology of non-destructive testing of composite wind turbine blades.

The experimental, analytical and numerical study of brittle fracture, including static and dynamic behaviour of propagating cracks in brittle materials.
