Research Summary

My research interests are primarily in Polymer Composites, in particular Textile Composites, and Technical Textiles. Key activities include:

  • Modelling of textile composites - including geometric modelling of textile structures (TexGen), and unit cell modelling for processing and performance, particularly for 3D woven materials
  • Liquid moulding processes (such as resin transfer moulding and vacuum infusion) applied to aerospace and automotive components - current work here is focused on process variability and automated process control using on-line simulation
  • Modelling of reinforcement/prepreg forming and impregnation processes
  • Performance of technical textiles - including anti-slash fabrics and airbag materials

Future Research

Future research will focus on the development of multi-scale models for processing and performance of advanced textile forms, both for polymer composite components and for technical textiles. In particular, three-dimensional textiles (3D woven, braided) will be investigated in more detail, and design and performance of technical textiles for demanding applications including stab/ballistic protection will be studied. These activities build upon work on textile modelling which has led our group to be rated "internationally leading" in textile/composites research.
