Current Research

My research career in the Earth Sciences is characterised by its diversity and this is reflected in my publication output which includes high quality publications on ore deposits, organic geochemistry, palaeoenvironment, reactive transport modelling, inorganic geochemistry, and petrology. Currently my main focus is on understanding the long term evolution of the peatland carbon reservoir, utililising peat and thick lignite cores to obtain time resolved records of carbon accumulation and atmospheric deposition. Recent research activity includes work on the Tibetan peatland to establish a record of changes in the East Asian Monsoon and atmospheric deposition. On a different note we have recently completed ground breaking work on the link between the lung cancer and coals from the Permo-Triassic Boundary. This work indicates that high silica coals produced at the Permo-Triassic boundary may be responsible for the highest known lung cancer mortality rates in Xuan Wei, Yunnan Province, China.
