Expertise Summary

Dr Douglas Brown carries out internationally-supported coal and minerals research. He is also responsible for the co-ordination of all European Coal and Steel Projects in the School. He is a chartered engineer and chartered chemist, and a corporate member of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Minerals Engineering Society. He is the School Safety Officer. Douglas is a member of the Coal Preparation committees of the British Standards Institution and the International Standards Organisation. He is the Section Chairman of the South Midlands Section of the Minerals Engineering Society.

Current Research

Dr Douglas Brown has developed research interests in the field of Coal Preparation. His specialities are coal handleability, flocculation, froth flotation, filtration, and de-watering of fines and clay waste solids. Most recently, he designed and developed a novel coal handleability monitor. He is the author of over 30 technical publications, including final project reports on research projects to the European Coal and Steel Community.
