Biography

General:

I am an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Thermofluids Group and the deputy-director and head of fluid for the University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Transmission Systems (UTC), my main activity centre, supported by Rolls-Royce. The fluid section is made of three groups, experimental, CFD/modelling and analytical and involves 16 researchers as of March 2012, as well as 3 dedicated technicians, 2 visiting professors and an administration person. Technically, I lead the UTC CFD/modelling group.

My background is in general Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and I worked for ANSYS-CFX until July 2003 when I joined the University of Nottingham. I spent a great part of 2009 at Rolls Royce (Fluid Systems Group) with support from the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng). I maintain a close working relationship with the company focused on research strategy and CFD methods via the UTC and also directly, for I remain seconded to the company, as a consultant and specialist, one day per week.

I am involved in computational mechanics activities (specifically in thermofluids and CFD) across the University and, as a member of the management board for the Spencer's Institute for Theoretical and Computational Mechanics, I have represented the University Computational Fluid Dynamics Priority Group which I have also chaired. I teach general fluids and computational fluid dynamics courses at under- and post-graduate levels and currently supervise 6 PhD students and 3 research fellows working on CFD applications or on numerical methods, as well as a number of interns. I am the Faculty of Engineering course director for the MSc in CFD.

In Aug. 2009 I was awarded the 16th Harold J. Schoemaker Award by IAHR for my paper Morvan et al., (2008), "The Concept of Roughness in Fluvial Hydraulics and Its Formulation in 1D, 2D, and 3D Numerical Simulation Models", J. Hyd. Res., 46(2), pp. 191-208 (with co-authors), at the 33rd IAHR World Congress in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This award is for the most outstanding paper published in Hydraulic Research during the previous two years (link: http://content.asce.org/files/pdf/IAHR09_Onsite_Program.pdf).

I support the University of Nottingham in Latin America, Brazil in particular. I have good research contacts with ESSS, Petrobras, IME, UFRJ and UFSC. I was keynote speaker at the CFDOil conference held in Rio de Janeiro in July 2010. I have visited the Petrobras Research Centre in Rio de Janeiro (Fundao) in 2010. Over the past few years I have represented the University and the British Council on a number of official visits to Brazilian universities, research & funding bodies.

Research:

My areas of research interests are in fluid mechanics and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), particularly applied to internal flow problems such as in channels, ducts and pipes or aero-engine components, for single and two-phase flows, with and without heat transfer. I am a consultant to Rolls Royce on a part time basis, as part of my association to the UTC and as a result of my RAEng Industrial Fellowship spent at Rolls Royce in 2009. Under these roles I work to ensure that we can transfer the UTC's numerical research into tools and methods the company can exploit; thus we work closely with the development team at ANSYS and methods at Rolls-Royce for example.

My two-phase, internal flow interests also mean that I interact with the energy sector and I have held research grants, with support from British and international companies (EPSRC funded), and work on research contract with Petrobras too.

I also pursue some research work in the fields of external flow dynamics and fluid-structure interaction (FSI), with applications to flow simulations past cylinders but also to bluff bodies for sport engineering applications, e.g. FSI for yacht racing or, in an advisory position, swimmers' hydrodynamic performance for Speedo.

Finally I am generally interested in the development of novel numerical techniques to tackle some of the above problems and currently work on meshless methods, in particular based on radial basis functions (RBF) and smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) applied to two phase flows, with my colleagues Prof. Power, Prof. Cliffe and Dr Pearce.

I have supervised 13 PhD students to completion since 2003.

External Activities:

I am a consultant to Rolls Royce Fluid Systems Group and TS&D. I collaborate on their research strategy and methods in the areas of CFD and internal gas-liquid flows, with applications to oil (and fuel) systems in transmissions.

I am a member of the Speedo Aqualab (TM) research and development team. I act as their main CFD advisor helping to coordinate the Aqualab CFD research programme, developing new techniques and models and running CFD simulations that feed directly into the design process. Our current objective is the development of the equipment for the London 2012 Olympics.

I support some of the modelling activities of ESSS.

I am involved in research and management initiatives outside the university and, for example, sit on the ERCOFTAC UK Steering Committee and am a member of the NAFEMS CFD Working Group. I am also an advisor to DEFRA.

I have acted as a peer reviewer, and in no particular order, for the IAHR Journal of Hydraulic Research, Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, Advances in Water Resources, Journal of Engineering Mechanics, Transport in Porous Media, International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat and Fluid Flow, International Journal of Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements (EABE) and other Mesh Reduction Methods, Progress in CFD, Aerospace Science and Technology as well as for DEFRA.

I have examined PhD candidates in the UK at the Universities of Birmingham, Cranfield and at QMUL. I have also examined the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
