Teaching Summary

Undergraduate Modules Taught

I co-teach in the areas of Old Norse and Viking Studies, and Old English, for the core first- and second-year modules, Beginnings of English, and Medieval Englishes: Variation and Continuity. I contribute lectures to the optional first-year/subsidiary module The Viking World. I convene and teach an optional second-year module on Norse mythology (Ice and Fire: Myths and Heroes of North), and a third-year option on the sagas (Outlaws, Ghosts and Heroes: An Introduction to Old Icelandic Literature).

Postgraduate Modules Taught

I offer a range of modules available to students on the MAs in Norse and Viking Studies, Viking and Anglo-Saxon Studies, Medieval English and Medieval Studies. Most of these modules are also available to students on other MAs. The modules I offer normally cover topics in: Research Approaches to Viking Studies, Old Norse Language and Texts, Old Icelandic Sagas, Old Norse Poetry, and Runology. I also supervise MA dissertations in these areas.

Current Research Students

I am currently principal supervisor for the following research students:

  • Ruarigh Dale, working on the figure of the berserkr
  • Annette Jones, working on runic inscriptions in Norwegian stave churches
  • Elizaveta Matveeva, working on questions of genre in Hrólfs saga kraka and related texts
  • Marjolein Stern, working on visual communication on Viking Age rune stones

I also co-supervise (50%) one research student:

  • Teva Vidal, working on houses and domestic life in the Viking Age.

Additionally, I am second supervisor (20%) for a further two research students.

Past Research Students

In the past, I have supervised successful PhDs on the poetics of the Sagas of Icelanders (Slavica Rankovic), the horse in the Viking imagination (Betsy van der Hoek-Springer), poetic discourse in Viking Age England (Jayne Carroll), and the historical context of Scandinavian runic inscriptions in Britain (Katherine Holman).

Current Research

My current research centres on the relationships of language, texts and contexts in the Viking Age and medieval Scandinavia, with a particular focus on runic inscriptions, skaldic verse and historical sagas. My specific major projects within these three areas at the moment are:

  • an English dictionary of Viking Age and medieval Scandinavian runic inscriptions (see http://runic-dictionary.nottingham.ac.uk).
  • the poetry of Sigvatr Þórðarson and Rögnvaldr, Earl of Orkney, which I am editing for the Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages project (see http://skaldic.arts.usyd.edu.au/db.php).
  • the literary and cultural history of Scandinavian Scotland, especially Orkney.

I also write on questions of orality and literacy, geography, migration and diaspora, and Scandinavian contacts with the British Isles. For a taster from a lecture I gave at an MA summer school in 2009, listen to this podcast.

I am currently director of the Centre for the Study of the Viking Age. I have been elected an 'utländsk arbetande ledamot' (international working member) of Kungl. Gustav Adolfs Akademien in Uppsala, Sweden.

Past Research

My expertise focuses on a variety of texts composed and written in Old Norse-Icelandic. These include:

  • poetry of the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries, originally oral and now surviving in written versions of the 13th century or later, especially that usually termed 'skaldic'
  • runic inscriptions from the 8th to the 15th century
  • Icelandic sagas, especially the Kings' Sagas and other historical works, and the Sagas of Icelanders.

I have extensive research experience in the general and cultural history of the Viking Age in Scandinavia and in areas settled by Scandinavians, with a broad knowledge of interdisciplinary approaches and an interest in questions of orality and literacy, and of migration, diaspora and cultural memory. I also have research experience in the more general history, literature and culture of Norway, and of Scandinavian Scotland.
