Current Research

My principal research specialities lie in the field of applied sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. Broadly, I am interested in interdisciplinary approaches to professional communication, with my present research, for example, focusing on multi-modal approaches to medical discourse and its practical implications for health care deliveries. Specifically this work involves a corpus linguistic exploration of electronic health messages: an examination of the health concerns communicated by contributors to medical professionals online. The research emphasis is on how these concerns are communicated to health professionals and what, in turn, their linguistic encoding tells us about individuals' attitudes towards health and illness. For a brief overview of the findings, please see my broadcast 'The Word Counter' on YouTube and my vodcast on Health Communication.

Recent articles and book chapter publications that have appeared in 2008/9 include 'How to use corpus linguistics in the study of health communication', in A. O'Keefe's and M. McCarthy's edited collection The Routledge Handbook of Corpus Linguistics (Routledge), and 'Electronic Health Discourse', in L. Cummings' edited collection The Pragmatics Encyclopedia (Routledge). Please click on the above tab for further details of all of my other publications and conference papers. I am also an active member of the Health Language Research Group (HLRG), an interdisciplinary body of health researchers and practitioners. For further information concerning the work of the HLRG, please visit the website: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/english/research/HLRG/

Future Research

I am currently working on a book on health communication to be published as part of the forthcoming new Routledge series of introductory textbooks for applied linguistics.
