Undergraduate Courses

We offer four Single Honours degrees in the School of English:

• BA Hons English
• BA Hons English Language and Literature
• BA Hons English with Creative Writing
• BA Hons Viking Studies

All four degrees start with a broad and varied first-year programme, giving you a basic introduction to all areas of English. After the first year, the degrees take different routes. To decide which is best for you, you need to consider what you find most interesting about the study of English.

The study of English can also be combined with a number of other subjects:

English at Nottingham

The School has an excellent reputation for both teaching and research. We have a large and diverse body of academic staff, and are unique in our ability to offer our students the opportunity to study across the range of areas in English, including:

• English Language and Applied Linguistics
• Medieval Language and Literature
• English Literature, 1500 to the present
• Drama and Performance
• Creative Writing
• Viking Studies

Whilst you will have the chance later in your degree to specialise, you will have the opportunity to study modules from the above areas during your three years of study. This makes Nottingham’s English degrees unique, particularly the BA in English.  We find that our undergraduate students engage extremely well with the disciplines and find the combination challenging and exciting.

 

The Modular Degree Scheme

To graduate with a BA honours degree from The University of Nottingham you must take 360 credits of modules: 120 in each year of study. Each module is worth a number of credits - the higher the number of credits, the greater the amount of work on the module. Most modules in the School of English are 20 credits (one sixth of your work during an academic year).
