Welcome to the Department of French and Francophone Studies

Female undergraduate student reading, Trent Building, University Park
The Department of French and Francophone Studies is housed in the historic Trent Building

We are one of the largest Departments of French in the UK, offering a wide range of degree combinations and an extensive choice of undergraduate modules in all areas of French Studies. Much of our teaching, especially in the final year, is research-led, which means that our students are taught by lecturers who are recognized experts in their field. Our language teaching is supported by a team of five native-French speakers (lectrices, lecteurs), four of whom work for us as part of an established exchange agreement with partner institutions in France.

The Department has 21 full-time lecturers, all of whom are research-active, producing high-quality research of international significance. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the Department was ranked third in the UK in terms of ‘Research Power’, which takes into account the number and proportion of research-active staff submitted in each unit. The Department publishes its own journal, Nottingham French Studies, founded in 1961. We also have a thriving postgraduate community, and are able to offer research supervision in all areas of French Studies.
