HRLC at 8th ICC Assembly of States Parties Meeting

18 - 26 November

Dr Olympia Bekou, Head of the International Criminal Justice Unit, will attend the 8th Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to be held in The Hague from 18 - 26 November.

Dr Bekou will speak at an ASP side event on 24 November, Implementing Legislation of the Rome Statute of the ICC in Domestic Legal Orders, a breakfast working meeting organised by Parliamentarians for Global Action and Amnesty International - International Justice Project.

This year's ASP will be the last one before the Review Conference of the Rome Statute which will take place in June 2010 in Kampala, Uganda.  A number of amendments to the Rome Statute have been proposed by States Parties and preliminary discussions will commence in The Hague this week.  Proposals by Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway and Liechtenstein to amend crimes under the jurisdiction of the ICC reflect or build upon their respective national legislation implementing the Rome Statute.  These documents can be found in the National Implementing Legislation Database, a fully-searchable electronic database developed by the Human Rights Law Centre for the Legal Tools Project.

The Legal Tools are a collection of electronic legal tools and services of the Court, which facilitate the effective research and practice of international criminal law and further the ICC's effective functioning.

HRLC is one of eight Outsourcing Partners of the ICC's Legal Tools Project, including the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, the International Research and Documentation Centre for War Crimes Trials (University of Marburg), the Institute of Informatics and Law (University of Saarland), the Institute of International Law and International Relations (Karl-Franzens University of Graz), the Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law, the TMC Asser Institute and TRIAL.
