Current Research

My research focuses on popular piety in the city of Bristol during the fifteenth century. It will investigate pious practices in the eighteen parishes that made up the city, questioning whether there were general trends across the city and whether there were distinctions between parishes and suburbs. This PhD aims to look at the whole city and consider the affect parishes may have had on each other. It will consider economic, social and spatial aspects that may have contributed to the pieties of Bristolians. In this approach, it will aim to see how piety functioned in the city, attempting to view it as a living microcosm. It will also attempt to account for changes that occurred to pious practices throughout the fifteenth century. Building on my work at MA level, this PhD will also consider the presence of lollardy in the city throughout the fifteenth century.

The following questions will be asked: 1) How and why was Bristolian piety different from other urban centres? 2) Were there cultural, economic and demographic differences between parishes? 3) How did the parishes interact? 4) What can Bristolian piety tell us about the supposed uniformity of the Catholic Church (Duffy, 1992) in the century prior to the Reformation?

My research is funded by the Midlands 3 Cities Doctoral Training Partnership. I am supervised by Dr Rob Lutton and Dr Richard Goddard and will also work in conjunction with the regional office of The Churches Conservation Trust in Bristol during my doctoral study.
