Research Summary

'Site-Seeing: postcards of Palestine/Israel and the visual construction of place.'

As a Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD with the British Museum, my research involves examining the production and use of postcards from Palestine/Israel as both examples of visual culture and material objects. I aim to show how a sense of place and identity is constructed and communicated; how 'sites' become 'sights'; and how these images and objects evolved in the context of wider political, social and economic developments.

My research interests are in national identity and visual culture; landscape and architectural histories; memory and narrative.

Past Research

Travel writing in the Ottoman Empire; Lebanese contemporary art.
