Lecturer in Health Psychology, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences
Heather Buchanan is a chartered psychologist and registered health psychologist who joined the Institute of Work, Health & Organisations as a lecturer in health psychology in January 2007. She completed her undergraduate degree in Social Sciences majoring in Psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University followed by an MSc in Psychology by research at the University of Stirling. She then moved to Newcastle University's Dental School where she obtained her PhD. Heather is an active member of the BPS Division of Health Psychology where she is a member of the DHP Training Committee and was previously the DHP National Conference Organiser (2005, 2006). She is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Behavioural Medicine and also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the British Journal of Health Psychology. Within the Institute, Heather is course director for the MSc Health Psychology and has four PhD students. Her main research interests are applying psychology to the dental context and chronic illness.

Dr Buchanan's main current research interests are (1) applying psychology to the dental context (including the development of assessment tools for measurement of dental anxiety; children's reasoning regarding oral health and the role of emotional disclosure in reducing dental anxiety and phobia) and (2) the impact of chronic illness on family members.
Application of the transtheoretical model to dental health behaviours (e.g., dental attendance; consumption of carbonated drinks in adolescence).
A longitudinal study exploring the efficacy of dental phobia support groups on a number of key outcomes (e.g., dental attendance).
