Biography

Dr. Shihning Chou is a Registered Forensic Psychologist. She obtained her BSc (Hons) in Psychology and MSc in Forensic Psychology Practice from the University of Birmingham. She completed her PhD, looking at international adoption, its link with deinstitutionalisation and the effects on adopted children, at the University of Liverpool.

At the University of Birmingham, she was employed as a research associate, working on various research projects between 2001 and 2005. She then worked as a school instructor, organising the module and delivering the teaching on systematic review methodology and advising on forensic psychology doctorate review projects from 2005 to 2007. Between 2007 and 2009, she worked as a research associate at the University of Liverpool before joining the Institute of Work, Health & Organisations in April 2009.

After joining the Institute, Dr Chou's main responsibility initially was to work with Professor Kevin Browne, Director of Forensic Psychology Programmes, to set up the Professional Doctorate in Forensic Psychology and MSc in Criminological Psychology. From February 2010, she transferred to work as the project manager for an EU Daphne funded project on child abandonment in Europe. She became a full time Lecturer in Forensic Psychology in October 2010.

Dr Shihning Chou is the Director of the MSc in Criminological Psychology and Year 1 D.Foren.Psy.. For the MSc/Year 1, she convenes the modules on 'criminological psychology: theories of criminal behaviour' and 'legal psychology: policing and criminal justice'. She is also the module convener on 'systematic reviews and critical appraisal' for D.Foren.Psy. She is currently supervising 15 systematic review projects for the D.Foren.Psy. and 10 research projects for the MSc in criminological psychology and Year 1 D.Foren.Psy. trainees.

Current Research

Dr Chou's interest is the development of offending behaviour and psychological vulnerability in general and the consequences of childhood victimisation. She is currently investigating individual behaviours and psychological reactions under political violence and the consequences on individuals as well as the society as a whole from a developmental perspective, in particular, attachment theory. She also carries out systematic reviews and is interested in further developing/adapting the methodology for psychological research.
