Biography

Sarah Dromgoole studied Law as an undergraduate at the University of Southampton, where she had the opportunity to specialise in maritime law subjects. After graduating, she worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Maritime Law, University of Southampton, and then briefly as a lecturer at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary College, University of London. In 1990 she took up a lectureship at the University of Leicester. During her early years at Leicester she worked part-time on a PhD, which was awarded in 1993 (by the University of Southampton). She was promoted to Senior Lecturer and then to Reader, before taking up a Chair in Maritime Law at the University of Nottingham.

Expertise Summary

Sarah's research focuses primarily on the legal protection of the underwater cultural heritage, as well as the law relating to shipwrecks more generally. She has published extensively in this field, on both domestic and international law aspects. Of particular note are her edited collections of national perspectives on the underwater cultural heritage (see Publications List). She is frequently consulted on the subject, as well as invited to give papers at conferences and other events.

Sarah is a member of the Joint Nautical Archaeology Policy Committee, which brings together governmental and non-governmental bodies with a role in the management of the UK's underwater cultural heritage. Her work with this committee since its establishment in 1989 has enabled her to have direct engagement with the process of law and policy reform.

Sarah has recently completed a 12-month Leverhulme Research Fellowship and is in the final stages of preparing a substantial monograph on Underwater Cultural Heritage and International Law, to be published by Cambridge University Press. She has also been collaborating with Dr. Craig Forrest, University of Queensland, in research related to hazardous wrecks. An outcome of this collaboration is a co-authored article examining the relationship between hazardous historic wrecks and the Wreck Removal Convention 2007, which was published in Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly in early 2011.

Sarah is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, a leading journal on international law of the sea.
